How We Got Started

Over 20 years ago I, along with the help of a few friends, started Revival Clothing because I saw a need for well-made, authentic, affordable, historical clothing within a business model where most styles are kept in stock. Our goal was to create garments that are flattering, functional, durable, and affordable while preserving a historical line.

Because there are very few surviving examples of medieval clothing our work, must of necessity, be interpretive. Working from museum fragments, illuminations, paintings, and written references, we strive to combine elements common to a given style into a new garment that could be representative of the period while also being accessible and well fitting. When altering a pattern to make it more efficient to produce we do not sacrifice the authenticity of the historical silhouette. Finally, we test each piece for function, durability and comfort(we live and work and play in our clothes , too!). The military garments are further tested on the field under the stress provided by us and other experienced combatants.

In the course of the decades we've been running Revival Clothing we found that our role in the community wasn't defined solely as supplier of medieval styles but equally as educators about medieval clothing and culture. We have had countless requests for the knowledge base we've accumulated over the years - expertise in finding and interpreting medieval art, sourcing authentic fabrics, pattern making, construction methods and more.

Which has brought me to the moment - the introduction of our platform for teaching, learning and exchanging information about medieval clothing: www.sewmedieval.com. We will be adding many features in the coming weeks and months and I'm really excited about this next step in our journey consumed with the love and appreciation of medieval aesthetics and culture. I can't wait to meet you in our newly founded community space. Until then,

yours in happy creating!

Nicole
